Report from Nowhere: Two Tourist Stops

Two tourist destinations I bet you never thought of:

  • Bratislava

That would be the capital of Slovakia, on the road from Prague to Budapest. It’s on the Danube, which means it gets riverboat traffic, not necessarily a plus. It’s got an authentic but lugubrious old castle. The real draw is the old town, with some of the best hanging-out street cafes in all of Europe. Also lots of good music, opera and otherwise. Take a backpack full of books, chill out in the street cafes all day and go to the opera at night. How can you beat it?

No, it is not a hole. Perhaps you were thinking of Brno.

  • Tacoma

Downhill from Seattle, poorer, and a lot less crowded. We found a funky little cinema club downtown that was packing them in on a Sunday afternoon. But the real draw is the waterfront promenade in Ruston, especially Duke’s Chowder House for some of the best sea food you could imagine.
