Cute

Just now learned (from Michael Pennington's excellent commentary on Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream) that the original meaning of "preposterous" was "putting the back end first." Pre? Post? Get it?

Then will two at once woo one;
That must needs be sport alone;
And those things do best please me
That befal preposterously.

...that's Puck, commenting on the confused lovers, as they chase each other around the stage in a crypto-proto Feydeau farce.
