Heading Home

Checking in from the Frankfort Airport, where they'll take American money for small bottles of water, at $5 each. More Central Asia postings in a couple of days, but I still don't know why they spell Samarqand with a q.

Five bucks American for a bottle of water? Wait until the Republican financial meltdown gets a little more molten. You'll be paying $500.

Or Frankfort with an "o". Kidding aside, I have great memories of that airport, in 1981. I think my friend Tom and I were the first kids from HI to skateboard its halls. They would have given us the water if we'd just promise to sit still.

Oh, and NATO troops were patrolling the place. I was much more impressed then than I am with TSA now. Last time I was at LAX I was accosted by a TSA representative who was holding a white bucket with change and requesting "donations for the poor" as his colleague checked boarding passes.

I declined to give and he said, "that's right, **** the poor" to which I replied, "no mate, **** you."
