We're due today in Nicosia, Leukosia, Λευκωσία, Lefkoşa, and it occurs to me that this was one foreign place-name I knew well in my youth because it has been the locus of so much conflict, in this case between Greeks and Turks. At this writing I haven't seen it yet, but I anticipate one of those places like Jerusalem where two cultures live side by side not so much in amity as in a kind of brittle self-restraint.
