Gay Talese Tries and Fails to Show that He's Cool

Gay Talese has a curious blog post up at the NYT calculated to show that
(a) He recognizes Chief Justice Roberts; and
(b) He is too cool to make a big deal out of it; and
(c) He is clever enough to come up with a creative response when challenged; AND
(d) Eat your heart out, yokel.
But the whole episode occurred at Lumi's. Whoa, there, big guy, Lumi's? Lumi's is a good candidate for the most boring restaurant in New York. As such it is an ideal venue for Chief Justice Roberts, who almost makes an aesthetic out of boring. But if Gay Talese is going to show himself as the epitmome of cool, he is going to have to find better digs.

By what standard? It looks like your typical UES Italian to me. Ditto the menu. Neither boring nor exciting. Just sort of upmarket basic, nicely presented. You find that boring? Sorry, we don't do many worm sandwiches in thesed parts.

I know, I know. Since they shut down Lucky Chan's, the transvestitute Chinese restaurant on the Lower East Side, and the French kitchen S&M restaurant around the corner from it (the one where the waitresses wore leather bustiers and offered to whip the customers while they waited for their hanger steaks and pommes frites) it's hard to find a restaurant that's really, REALLY exciting. Unless you're into topless lap dances with your sirloin. Or rotted cabbage in one of the West 32nd Street Koreatown joints.

But most of us here will settle for a good piece of branzino. a nice Barolo, and a noise level at which we can at least here one another shout.

Salut, and try to have a pleasant evening.

Crankily yours,
