Maybe he was pulling me my leg, but here is what an archaeologist told me about ancient pottery, and how archeologists study it. First they do the obvious things: they weigh it, they examine the color and the texture. Maybe they run a chemical sample. But then (he said) they taste it.
Taste it? Sure. Nothing that is going to hurt you too bad. You can learn a lot by tasting it.

Source Note: I found this in the basement of the Holiday Inn in downtown Nikosia (Lefkosia), Cyprus. Restaurant seems to be out of business, though. Maybe not enough archaeologists around here.
