Here's a datapoint: evidently every Mongol warrior in the 13th Century traveled with 20 remounts--Mongol armies mobilized something like half of all the horses in the world, So one reason they weren't able to make it in Europe: not enough pasturage. Per SAM Adshead, as recounted in Ronald Findlay and Kevin O'Rourke, Power and Plenty 105 (2007).
