Depriving another Safeway checker of her job this morning, I was packing my groceries and signing my credit card chit when it struck--what's with this signature biz? Why hasn't somebody added recognition software so the machine can tell whether the signature is really mine? Or better, eyeballs?
I suppose somebody is working on it...

I'm guessing you haven't seen this yet.
Ha! No, I had not seen it, but the fact is my own signature is about that crazy. My handwriting has always been awful but back when I was a judge I sometimes had to sign hundreds of orders a day. Rather than use a stamp, which struck me as cheating, I fell into the habit of freehanding. My self-justification was that it was probably harder to fake than the real signature. Once in a while I do get challenged. And it drives my wife nuts, but so many things drive my wife nuts...
