Orwell's Rose
Michael Gilleland at Laudator Temporis Acti picks up a favorite of mine--George Orwell on "the Woolworth Rose." My memory was stimulated by Michael's anthology re "Taking the Long View." I especially like:
Vergil, Eclogues 9.50 (tr. H. Rushton Fairclough):
Graft thy pears, Daphnis; thy children's children shall gather fruits of thine.
insere, Daphni, piros; carpent tua poma nepotes.
