Gaga Me with a Spoon

David Brooks:
If you are the sort of person who attends opera ... it is not acceptable to believe that you have a more refined sensibility than people who like Lady Gaga, Ke$ha or graffiti.
Link.  To which Buce responds: oh yah?  I attend opera and I damn straight believe I have a more refined sensibility than people who like Lady Gaga.  I do like graffiti, though. I've never heard of Ke$ha.

On the other hand, although I do  attend opera, it may be that I am not the sort of person who attends opera. Status discrimination is a tricky business.

On the same theme, for the weirdest anti-elite slogan of the day, go here.

You were lucky. Let us now introduce Ken's General Rule of Popular Music: Anyone making a living as a singer the performance of whose songs is improved by their recording by the Glee cast* is a waste of money.

Full disclosure: I rarely attend opera, but that is a budgetary and time, not an aesthetic, preference. I attend even fewer Lady Gaga concerts.

*Exception noted for performances including Idina Menzel, or Idina Menzel and Lea Michele together. Both of whom have had and will have Broadway musical careers. No exception for Lea Michele solo performances, which is why the list is currently two people: Ke$ha and Katy Perry.
