Saletan has some interesting stuff up at Slate about cruelty against children, and by children (link). Perhaps not as many surprises here as you might like, but I did raise my eyebrows at his discussion of bullying--sample items: "Other students make me cry," "Other students look at me in a mean way," "Other students tease me," "Other students ignore me on purpose."
Uh-what about "other students cause me to run faster than I ever ran in my life, my small intestines turning to water--and then, when inevitably they catch me, they beat me into a heap of formless blubber"--? Now, let me tell you about my childhood...
