I can show an unbecoming indifference to the death of public persons I do not know but I have to admit the passing of Anthony Shadid rather wrong-footed me. He seems to have been everything you want in a foreign correspondent: patient, courageous, fully briefed, infinitely inquisitive, and with the indispensable capacity not to confuse himself with the story.
