I asked my friend Rob if all motels in his part of the world (the American Southwest) are owned by Gujaratis named Patel. Not all, said Rob; as you drive across West Texas, you see motel signs advertising "American owned." These, he said, you know to stay away from, because they are almost invariably inferior in quality to those owned by others.
